NST reclaims Allianz Media Badminton 2023 title from Defending Champions Astro

New Straits Times Press (NSTP) gained sweet revenge over defending champions Astro in the Allianz Media Badminton 2023 tournament with a 2-1 win in the final yesterday at the Sports Arena Sentosa with the match going down to the final Mix Doubles match. Coincidentally, the tournament was also held on World Badminton Day which is 5 July 2023.
Into its third edition, Allianz Media Badminton 2023 featured ten teams for the first time with Bernama making their debut, while Malaysiakini was making a return after a one-year hiatus. Allianz Malaysia on the other hand, sent two teams to support the tournament. The first edition was held in 2019. The tournament format consists of two Men’s Doubles and one Mix Doubles and scoring was 30 points.
Third place went to The Star who defeated debutant Bernama 2-1. The Plate final, also introduced for the first time, was won by Sinar Harian who beat China Press 2-1.
“This annual media tournament is something I look forward to as badminton is a sport I thoroughly enjoy. It also gives us a chance to engage with our media friends away from work. As I always say, work hard, play hard and congratulations to all winners today,” said Sean Wang, Chief Executive Officer of Allianz Malaysia Berhad and is also the Allianz badminton team captain.
