Kuala Lumpur, 19 May 2024 – The second qualifying round (QR2) of Allianz Junior Badminton Championship 2024 (AJBC) took place from 17 – 19 May in Jesselball Pearl City Sports Centre in Pulau Pinang.
It was double joy for Lim Zheng Jie from SMK Simpang Empat after taking home the U-15 Boys’ Singles and the U-15 Boys’ Doubles together with partner Kuak Dolton from SMK Berapit.
Twins Yeoh Jovy and Yeoh Covy from Han Chiang High School were crowned winners of the U-15 Girls’ Doubles defeating pair Eirdinna Eiylia and Ng Xiao Suan from SMK Convent Green Lane and SMK Bagan Jaya, respectively.
It was a grand comeback for the girls from Han Chiang High School as they missed out on last year’s tournament. “We like the Singles too but being sisters we have this closeness, and I think that’s an advantage.” remarked Jovy. “Although we have different views at times but she is my sister and my roommate, after all.” quipped the younger Covy.
For Jorus Lee Yu H’ng, whose sister, Lee Joinne, was a former champion at the AJBC Grand Finals last year, winning was a habit he was not about to break. The SJKC Kampung Valdor student, who is also Penang’s number one in the Under 12 category, beat Ong Yung Sen from SJK(C) Beng Teik (Pusat) to emerge triumphant in the U-11 Boys’ Singles.
However, Jorus chose to remain cautiously optimistic on his chances at winning the title. “There are other good players here but I would rather take it one game at a time.” remarked Jorus.
In the U-13 Girls’ Doubles, Chuah Tian Ning and Cynthia Ooi Jia Hui from Sekolah Kebangsaan Methodist and SJK(C) Kwang Hwa beat pair Syarifah Fashira Dayana binti Syed Jamalludin and Teoh Wen Yuan from SJK(C) Kay Sin and SJK(C) Jit Sin, respectively.
For 12-year-old Cynthia, the daily grind is something she looks forward to. The Kwang Hwa student is part of 3 clubs and is also a Penang state player. “Training is part of me and part of my daily schedule. Certainly, it’s not tiring. I look forward to it everyday.” elaborated Cynthia.
“I only started playing badminton in April 2022 and I know that I still have some way to go yet but I hope that one day I can become a national player.” she added.
The AJBC is in its third year running and this year features the Under-11 category. The next Qualifying Round (Q3) will take place in Alor Setar, Kedah from 28 to 30 June 2024.
